OpenJPEG is a free implementation of the JPEG-2000 standard. It is used by ImageMagick and FFmpeg (from version 0.8) , among others . The program library is thus contained in millions of media players. OpenJPEG has been the official reference software for JPEG 2000 since May 2015.

OpenJPEG is a fork of libj2k that David Janssens developed as part of his thesis at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in 2001.
