OpenMG

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The electronics group Sony uses OpenMG to summarize a concept that mainly consists of four technologies:

  • Authentication of connected hardware such as recording and playback devices for digital media
  • Protection of digital data from unauthorized duplication
  • Separating a digital content (such as music) from its license
  • Rights management for digital content (e.g. maximum number of copies allowed )

Sony uses this technology in particular for encoding music files. The software "Sonic Stage" , which is supplied as standard with most of the company's Vaio computers, converts all music files it manages into the OpenMG format (file extension .omg). Since music in this format can only be played on devices that also support it, there are now file converters on the Internet that can be used to convert files into more common formats such as WAV or MP3 .
