OpenMosix
openMosix was a free cluster management system that automatically distributed the workload to the available nodes. openMosix provided so-called “ single system image (SSI)” capabilities. A computer network (cluster) appears to the user like a single computer. Here, processes (not threads ) can migrate to nodes on which they can potentially be processed more quickly ( live migration ). Processes with little or no input / output load benefit from this.
openMosix was released as a patch for the Linux kernel . There were also special distributions with live CDs.
The development of openMosix was stopped on March 1st, 2008. The source code of the openMosix project is further developed in the LinuxPMI project.
Development history
openMosix was split off from the MOSIX source codes by Moshe Bar on February 10, 2002 with the changeover from MOSIX to proprietary software . It was considered stable on the Linux kernels of versions 2.4.x, but there was only one implementation for the x86 architecture (32 bit). The porting to the Linux 2.6 kernel series never got beyond alpha status. With the port on kernel version 2.6, the project also began development for 64-bit kernels based on AMD64 .
On July 15, 2007, Moshe Bar announced the end of support ( EOL ) for openMosix for March 1, 2008. This was justified with the increasing availability of inexpensive multi - core processor systems and the consequent decreasing demand for SSI clusters.
The Gentoo Linux distribution offered an openMosix kernel to choose from until February 2007.
Since March 1st, 2008 the source code of openMosix is only available for read-only access to SourceForge .

clusterKnoppix is a now discontinued, specialized Linux distribution based on Knoppix , which uses the openMosix kernel.
In order to set up a computer network, various things have to be set up in the classic way, such as exchanging rsh or ssh keys, setting up file system releases, assigning IP addresses and adapting host configurations.
clusterKnoppix automates a lot of this work. The distribution comprised an automatic configuration system in which new clusterKnoppix nodes were integrated into the computer network without any further action. The last release was on December 24, 2004.
