OpenVAS ( Open V ulnerability A ssessment S ystem ) is a framework for various services and tools and provides a solution for vulnerabilities -Scanning and vulnerability management.

The actual security scanner is supplemented by a daily updated feed service with so-called Network Vulnerability Tests (NVTs). As of June 2016, this feed contains over 47,000 NVTs.

All OpenVAS components are free software . Most of them are licensed under the GPL .

OpenVAS is also offered by the German Federal Office for Information Security .

history

OpenVAS (initially started as GNessUs , but then renamed very soon) is free security software .

OpenVAS was split off from Nessus when Nessus switched to a proprietary license in 2005. In order to continue to have a free version, OpenVAS has since been further developed on the basis of the last free version by Nessus. Version 1.0 was released in October 2007.

In 2006 the official website was not available for a while. In mid-2007, OpenVAS was re-added to the list of SPI projects .

Version 8.0 was released in April 2015. After almost 24 months, the current version 9.0 was released in March 2017.

The switch to GitHub and the establishment of a community forum were completed in 2018.

In 2019, the delimitation of the company's own branding was completed. As originally defined and started, OpenVAS now represents the actual vulnerability scanner. The OpenVAS scanner is now embedded in the basic structure of Greenbone Vulnerability Management (GVM).
