Open Food Facts is a free, online, crowdsourcing database of food products from around the world. It is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL) and with the photos added by users under the Creative Commons license with attribution.
history
The project was founded on May 19, 2012 by the French programmer Stéphane Gigandet. The occasion was the “Food Revolution Day” organized by Jamie Oliver . In 2013 it won the Dataconnexions Prize from Etalabund . 2015 OKFN Prize from the Open Knowledge Foundation .
In May 2016 there were more than 80,000 products from 141 different countries in the database. In June 2017, thanks to the increasing use of apps and open data imports from various countries, this number rose to 880,000.
overview
The project collects information and data on food products from around the world.
For each product, the database stores the article description, quantity, type of packaging, brand, category, manufacturing or processing locations, countries and shops in which the product is sold, list of ingredients, traces that can cause food allergies or food taboos, as well as food additives and nutritional information.
All employees can add and edit products based on the information explicitly stated on the packaging. The GTIN number printed on the packaging within the barcode is normally used as an identifier for each product. Cellular applications are used to take photos and information, which the volunteers then manually edit.
Because of the similar mechanisms for changing, expanding or deleting the content and structure, the project is often compared to Wikipedia in the media.
Re-use
The data is used by various projects, for example on topics such as palm oil, sugar or the places where the products are manufactured.
