The Open Haven Church

Open Haven ( German  Open Harbor ) is the Protestant parish church of Oost-Souburg , a district of the municipality of Vlissingen in the Dutch province of Zeeland .

history

Before 1235 there was already a chapel in Oost-Souburg in the immediate vicinity of a ring wall that was built in Carolingian times, and in 1250 it was parish off as an independent parish church from West-Soubourg . Until the Reformation, the church bore the patronage of Onze Lieve Vrouw van de Toren ( Our Lady of the Tower ). In the church, pilgrims venerated a miraculous image of Our Lady.

In the 14th century the basement of the church tower was built, in the 15th century a late Gothic three-nave nave was added, which was devastated in 1572/73 in the course of the Eighty Years' War . The nave was restored as early as 1582/83. A new choir was not built, as it no longer had a function in the worship service of a Reformed preaching church. In 1605 the church tower was raised. The nave and tower were given their final shape during construction work in the 19th century.

The parish joined the Protestant Church in the Netherlands in 2005 and today names its church building Open Haven .
