Operation Sky Monitor

The Operation Sky Monitor (dt. About Skyguard ) was a military operation NATO . It set up a no-fly zone for military flights in the airspace of Bosnia-Herzegovina during the Balkan conflict .

On October 9, 1992, the UN Security Council passed resolution 781, which banned military flights over Bosnia-Herzegovina with the exception of those of the United Nations Protection Force ( UNPROFOR ). For this purpose, NATO AWACS aircraft were used, which had been monitoring naval activities in the Adriatic Sea since July 1992 in the Maritime Monitor operations and later Maritime Guard . Allied Forces Southern Europe was responsible for the operation .

The surveillance of the airspace began on October 16 by NATO AWACS over the Adriatic and from October 31 over Hungary . The Boeing E-3 Sentry took off from bases in Germany (they are stationed at Geilenkirchen Air Base ), Italy and Greece. In addition, E-3s owned by the Royal Air Force and the French Air Force were used .

On March 31, 1993, Resolution 816 extended the flight ban to all undeclared flights, so that Sky Monitor expired and Operation Deny Flight began on April 12 .
