Budapest Operetta Theater
The Budapest Operetta Theater (initially also Orfeum Somossy , Capital Operetta Theater or Fővárosi Operettszínház ) is a musical theater institution in the Hungarian capital Budapest , in the Terézváros district .
history
In the Orfeum Somossy house, built in 1894 according to a design by Fellner and Helmer , there was initially variety and other entertainment performances , but in 1922 it was converted into a theater and later housed the Metropolitan Operetta Theater (Hungarian: Fővárosi Operettszínház), another entertainment theater next to the Vígszínház , in which a series of operettas by Emerich Kálmán were premiered.
Since the 1960s, the performances have also expanded to include musicals , such as My Fair Lady ( Frederick Loewe ), Hello Dolly! ( Jerry Herman ), West Side Story ( Leonard Bernstein ), The Fiddler on the Roof ( Jerry Bock ) and Funny Girl ( Jule Styne ).
In 1966 the building was completely rebuilt, and in 2001 another renovation took place.

The theater has 901 seats. There are currently 500 performances per year; in 2006/07 401 079 people saw the performances.
The ensemble often performs abroad, for example in Japan, the USA, Vienna, Prague.
