Oppressor was a technical death metal band from Chicago , Illinois that was formed in 1991 and split again in 1999. They released three albums. Three of the band members founded the alternative metal band SOiL .

history

Oppressor was founded in May 1991 by Tim King and Adam Zadel. A month later, another guitarist, Jim Stopper, and drummer Tom Schofield joined the band. They recorded the first Demo World subscription that same year. The second demo As Blood Flows , which was recorded in 1992, brought the band a contract with the Red Light Records label , where they released their debut album Solstice of Oppression in 1994. Shortly after the album was released, however, Red Light went bankrupt and the band was forced to find another label. In the meantime, the band released the compilation album Oppression Live / As Blood Flows on Megalithic Records . However, Megalithic went bankrupt a short time later, although it had only been around for a few months. Ultimately, the band signed a contract with Olympic Recordings and released their next album Agony in 1996. The year before, Jim Stopper, Shaun Glass (guitarist with Broken Hope ) and Ryan McCombs had founded the alternative metal band SOiL , which was actually only called Side project was intended. In 1998 Oppressor released their last album called Elements of Corrosion . The band split in 1999 as the side project SOiL began to become more successful as an oppressor.

style

The style Oppressor played later came to be known as Technical Death Metal . In terms of sound, the style can be compared with bands like Morbid Angel and Gorguts . Thematically, her songs deal with death, suffering and moral depravity.
