OrCAD is a program package sold by Cadence Design Systems , a company based in San José (California) , which is used in the EDA area to develop electronic circuits .

It essentially comprises a program for inputting circuit diagrams ( OrCAD Capture ), a program for manual and automatic disengagement of printed circuit boards ( OrCAD PCB Designer ) and a circuit simulator PSpice for simulating the circuits. The older version OrCAD Layout was replaced in 2007 by the Allegro-compatible OrCAD PCB Editor. The Autorouter Specctra was added. Since 2010 many functions have been made from Allegro, such as B. an SI simulator, integrated into the OrCAD products and the price significantly reduced. There are many apps on the OrCAD Marketplace, some of which are offered free of charge. This z. B. Generate barcodes and generate special reports. Since release 16.6, Cadence has been publishing a new version with new functions every quarter through its distributors. The so-called QIRs (quarterly incremental releases) can easily be reloaded. There are new functions for Capture, PCB Editor and PSpice included. With the scripting language TCL new functions in OrCAD Capture, e.g. B. Intelligent PDF output of circuit diagrams available.

With version 17.2, OrCAD was converted to 64-bit in 2017 and also supports a 3D canvas for the integration of mechanical components. In summer 2019 OrCAD Capture got the Constraint Manager from the professional version Cadence Allegro PCB.

The name is an abbreviation made up of the first two letters of the state of origin of the developer company Oregon and the abbreviation for computer-aided design .
