GeoEye was a commercial company for the distribution of satellite photos and the provision of data for geographic information systems . It had its headquarters in Herndon in the US state of Virginia and was established in January 2006 following the acquisition of Space Imaging by Orbimage Holdings Inc founded. With about 300 employees, it will achieve sales of more than 200 million US dollars after the merger .

GeoEye operated three observation satellites with a spatial resolution of better than 1 m: OrbView-2, OrbView-3 and IKONOS . Another satellite, GeoEye-1 , has been operational since October 2008.

On January 31, 2013, the acquisition of GeoEye by competitor DigitalGlobe was completed. The launch of the GeoEye-2 satellite , which was scheduled for May 2013, was canceled and the satellite was put into storage. It was launched on November 11, 2016 under the designation WorldView-4 on an Atlas V launcher.
