DigitalGlobe is a Denver- based company that provides satellite imagery . At the end of 2015, Digital Globe had 1,189 employees.
The company was founded by Walter Scott in 1992 as Earth imaging and information company . In the same year it received the approval of the American Department of Commerce against the background of the Land Remote Sensing Policy Act to be allowed to make high-resolution recordings from space.
The original name of the company was WorldView , it was called EarthWatch from 1995 and DigitalGlobe from September 2001.
With the launch of the QuickBird 2 satellite on October 18, 2001, Digital Globe took a top position among providers worldwide. Google Earth and Nokia Maps, for example, get their material from DigitalGlobe. The company put additional satellites into operation in 2007 with WorldView-1 and in 2009 with WorldView-2 . The launch of WorldView-3 with an Atlas V was made on August 13, 2014 .
With effect from January 30, 2013, DigitalGlobe merged with competitor GeoEye . The launch of the GeoEye-2 satellite , which was scheduled for May 2013, was canceled and the satellite was put into storage. It was launched into space on November 11, 2016 under the name WorldView-4 .
Since 2016, Facebook has been mapping areas for OpenStreetMap automatically together with DigitalGlobe .

Featured photos
In 2011, the company published a picture of the previously unknown first aircraft carrier in the People's Republic of China . The picture showed the former Ukrainian carrier “Varyag” (later Liaoning ) off the Chinese coast in the Yellow Sea. The company said that on December 8, 2011, pictures of the aircraft carrier “Varyag” were taken. An analyst from the company came across the recording while browsing the photos.
