The Schleiden space is a small triangular square in Berlin district Friedrichshain . It was laid out between 1874 and 1881 and is considered the gateway to the Samaritan Quarter .

history

The northern area of Frankfurter Allee within the S-Bahn ring was developed for residential purposes in the 19th century. After the road layouts had been determined, a triangular square with an area of 7800 square meters was created at the intersection of Rigaer, Pettenkofer and Waldeyerstraße.

Since August 23, 1905, the square has been named after the botanist Matthias Jacob Schleiden . The square is not far from the S-Bahn and U-Bahn station Frankfurter Allee . The buildings in this area after the Samaritan Church and Samaritan neighborhood is called, was substantially completed 1910th For almost 100 years this place was an inconspicuous and little popular playground. In the years 2004 to May 2005 it was redesigned as a small green area on behalf of the responsible district office for 580,000 euros, whereby the residents were included in the preparation phase. The planning and execution was carried out by the company Stattbau GmbH in cooperation with the offices of Ariane Röntgen and Barbara Willecke. The now park-like place has an adventure playground and a skater facility. Since its completion, traffic calming at 30 km / h and parking space management has applied in all streets .

Right on the square (Schreinerstraße 32 / Waldeyerstraße 5) is a former listed town house. It is a massive four-storey brick building with a few neoclassical facade elements, which consists of a front and rear building with a side wing. It was extensively renovated in 2007/2008. The interior side wing was completely rebuilt and is designed in the shape of a staircase.

In the Rigaer Strasse on Schleidenplatz there was a mural depicting various people looking out of their windows, designed by the artist Hans Joachim Eggstein in 1987. This image disappeared when the new corner buildings were built. There is a new graffiti depicting a “flying carpet” on another corner of the square.

On the north side of Rigaer Straße, opposite the daycare center, in the middle of the south edge of the square, there is a "green plump" in the newer shape of a one-piece column .
