The first generation of the indica has been made since 1998. In 2001 it received improvements specifically in the interior and was then sold as V2 (version 2).

From autumn 2003 the MG Rover Group imported the Tata Indica to Western Europe, modified it and sold it as a City Rover . The number of units remained low and in May 2005 the import was discontinued with the bankruptcy of MG Rover. Some city rovers also made it to Germany. Tata did not have a sales organization in Germany, so the car was not available as an indica in Germany. However, there were isolated gray imports to Germany.

The Indigo notchback version has also been available since 2002 and the Indigo Marina station wagon since 2004. Both are considered compact vehicles due to their size.

Tata Indica V2 (2004-2008)

In 2004 all models received a facelift . The front apron is new, and there are also some dark plastic parts.

In Italy, the vehicle was last offered with a 1.4-l petrol engine (62.5 kW, 7 l / 100 km consumption) and a 1.4-l diesel (52 kW, 5.2 l / 100 km) . The model with a gasoline engine was also available with a system consisting of a gas mixer and an additional tank for operation with LPG .

Due to stricter safety and environmental regulations, the Indica Vista was released in 2008, while Indigo and Indigo Marina continued to be produced.

In 2008 the brand new version was presented as Indica Vista . The vehicle had grown in all dimensions to the size of a small car that was current at the time.

The engines differ depending on the country. A 1.2-liter gasoline engine with variable valve timing (VVT) and a 1.3-liter Quadra-Jet common rail diesel based on the Fiat JTD engine were new. The predecessor's 1.4-liter turbo-diesel was initially also offered in the Indica Vista, but has fallen victim to the tightening of Indian emissions standards.

In Italy, the car was offered with a 1.3-l diesel (55 kW, 4.9 l / 100 km consumption) and a 1.4-l petrol engine (55 kW, 5.0 l / 100 km).

In 2009 the notchback version Tata Indigo was replaced by a new model and has been called Indigo Manza ever since .

An electric version Indica Vista EV followed in mid-2011 , which was manufactured in the United Kingdom and also offered there.
