The Tatamobile 206 was introduced in 1988, the Tata 207DI came in 2002.

In 2005 the Tata TL 4x4 was presented for the Indian market. It was Tata's first offering in the pickup lifestyle segment (and the second in India). It was an upgraded version of the 207DI, which was popular with commercial transport companies.

The vehicle had a naturally aspirated diesel engine with 1948 cm³, which delivered 91 bhp (67 kW). There were various special equipment, such as bull bars , roll bars , power steering , air conditioning and power windows . The pickups were available with single and double cabs. The Tata Telcoline was the reinforced version. In some countries, a 2.0 liter R4 turbo diesel engine from Toyota was also installed, which offered more power. The TL was the most affordable pickup in its class, much cheaper than the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger .

A revised TL was presented at the 2006 Motor Show in Bologna . In late 2007 he appeared as Tata Xenon . The xenon is powered by the newly developed 2.2 l R4 DiCOR turbodiesel engine with an output of 103 kW (140 hp). A version with a double cabin is also to appear, but initially only for selected markets. The same platform is also used for the Tata Sumo Grande .

The car is being built in Thailand by Thonburi under a joint venture agreement and in Argentina by Fiat . Fiat's first pickup with a separate frame has the same design as the Xenon and is called Fiat Terra . The Xenon XT , a lifestyle pickup with four doors and five seats, was introduced in 2009. The vehicle combines an elegant appearance on the road with the off-road characteristics of a 4x4. Xenon was well received in Europe, particularly in Spain and Italy .

background

SPRINT was the code name of the project to develop Tata's first pickup for the whole world. Most of the world's pickup truck markets (with the exception of the US) are dominated by the major Japanese automakers such as Toyota, Isuzu, Mitsubishi and Nissan. As the study initiated by Tata shows, there is a good opportunity for the TL to capture a substantial part of this market. Tata therefore had a more in-depth market study carried out in Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, Thailand, Australia, Latin America, etc. in order to find out what requirements these markets place on the new pickup.

Aggressive development timing

It takes 36 to 50 months to develop a new product line. It is said that only Toyota has achieved 18 months so far. However, the name SPRINT already indicates that a short development time was particularly important. The team worked around the clock, applying the principle of “competitive development” and spreading the work across nine countries to meet the target and keep key activities running in parallel. The team delivered its work in just 17 months - from the first sketches in December 2005 to the start of production in May 2007.

Presentations and motor shows

The xenon was shown to the public for the first time at the Motor Show in Bologna in December 2006. In March 2007, the prototype also appeared at the Geneva Motor Show . So far, the xenon has been shown in 14 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia.

The Xenon is available with three different driver's cabs, normal and extended cab and double cab, each with right or left-hand drive. There are two engines to choose from - the 2.2 l and the 3.0 l; there are two- or four-wheel drive and two interior colors - dark gray and beige.
