The Tata Sumo is an SUV that was built by Tata Motors in India between 1994 and 2019 . It was one of the first passenger cars to be designed in India. In 2004 it received a major overhaul and was renamed Tata Sumo Victa in order to hold its own against its relatively modern competitors. In 2008 an off-road sports vehicle was released under the name Tata Sumo Grande . In 1994 the Sumo appeared with a naturally aspirated diesel engine with 1948 cc displacement. Later there was a turbocharged version of this engine upon request.

Before the appearance of sumo, the Indian market stagnated, where most vehicles in this segment were offered by Mahindra & Mahindra , whose vehicles were essentially derived from the Willys Jeep . Immediately after its launch, sumo conquered a significant part of the Indian sports vehicle market.

Spacio

There is also a simpler version of sumo called Tata Spacio . It is equipped with a 3.0-liter R4 diesel engine with direct injection from the popular 407DI. The most noticeable difference to Sumo were the round instead of the rectangular headlights. For agriculture, a version with a fabric roof was also introduced under the name Tata Spacio ST . After the revision in 2004, the Spacio got the design elements of the older Sumo. In 2007 there was the Victa with a 3.0 liter R4 engine in the Spacio. The spare wheel moved from the rear of the vehicle to the underbody. This model is available in eight and ten-seater versions and is very popular with private taxi and transport companies due to its lower cost.

Sumo Victa

The new Sumo Victa was released in 2004 and has electric windows, power steering, central locking with remote control , clear glass headlights, clear glass taillights, mirror-free electronic instruments, a tachometer, an LCD monitor, acoustic warnings and various trip meters. Some of these details are part of the standard equipment, some are available on request.

Sumo Grande (2008-2015)

On January 10, 2008, Tata introduced the Sumo Grande , which is powered by the new 2.2-liter R4 turbodiesel DiCOR engine. It is the most luxurious version of Sumo and has a completely different body. In the Tata model range, it ranks immediately below the Safari .
