Orbitel ( Bulgarian Орбител ) is a Bulgarian telecommunications service provider and Internet service provider . Orbitel has been part of Mobitel , the leading mobile communications provider in Bulgaria, a member of the Telekom Austria Group, since 2011 .

history

Orbitel was founded in 1997 by Victor Francess and Nikolai Gorchilov, who were on the company's board of directors until 2007. In 2006 it was the second largest fixed line telecommunications company in Bulgaria and its products were available in over 35 cities.

At the beginning of 2006, Magyar Telekom from Budapest, the Hungarian subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom , took over all shares in the company for a purchase price of 8 million euros. Orbitel, which primarily supplied business customers, had a turnover of 9.3 million euros the previous year with 133 employees. Telekom planned to expand the existing business and invest a further 7 million euros.

After reassessing the strategic importance of the Bulgarian market, however, the telecommunications group decided to withdraw. The company's backbone network was transferred to Novatel , another Bulgarian subsidiary founded in 2004, and Orbitel was subsequently sold to Spectrum Net for 5 million euros . Spectrum Net was a corporate project of Alfa Finance Holding that was completed in 2011 with the sale of Orbitel's shares to Mobitel .
