Max Gutmann

Max Gutmann (born April 7, 1923 in Treuchtlingen , † January 13, 1996 in Augsburg ) was a German entrepreneur and patron. He is considered one of the most important sponsors of sporting and scientific institutions in the city of Augsburg. Posthumously he was given honorary citizenship of the city for this.

Life

Gutmann, who comes from Franconia , built up a renowned clothing store in Augsburg in the years after the Second World War. He used his economic success for extensive social engagement. He was particularly interested in promoting sport. In 1965, together with the sports journalist Horst Eckert, he founded the celebrity team Datschiburger Kickers , which, with changing line-up, raised money for social purposes with charity games.

From the early 1980s Gutmann began to support the city's scientific institutions. Together with the Munich entrepreneur Erwin Mair , he laid the financial basis of the Augsburg University Foundation in November 1984. In 1990 he donated the Max Gutmann Prize, endowed with 2,000 D-Marks, for particularly qualified dissertations and master's theses in the fields of sports and economics. With his death in January 1996 he bequeathed one of his houses to the University of Augsburg . With the proceeds from its sale, Gutmann wanted to create permanent accommodation for guests of the university.
