Orchid Beach

Orchid Beach (German: Orchideenstrand ) is a holiday resort in the Parish of Wathumba on the sand island of Fraser Island in Queensland , Australia . The beach is located on Marloo Bay in the northeast of the island, around 35 kilometers south of Sandy Cape , its northernmost point. There are several attractions in the vicinity such as Cape Waddy Point and Indian Head with the Champagne Pools in the southeast or the Ngkala Rocks and Ocean Lake further north.

Orchid Beach was founded in the early 1960s by Baron Sir Reginald Barnwell, who operated an airline from Maryborough to Fraser Island. He intended to land his aircraft on the sandy beach of Orchid Beach and build a resort not far from it. Since the impassable terrain of the Middle Rocks made it difficult to transport building material to the beach, simple lodges were initially built in which the anglers who had flown in had to take care of themselves. The construction of the large Orchid Beach Resort , which opened in 1969, could not begin until 1968 .

Orchid Beach today consists mostly of vacation homes. There is a gas station and a shop. The beach serves as a landing strip for small planes. At Waddy Point and a northern stretch of beach there is the possibility to camp.
