The Order of the Argonauts , also known as the Order of St Nikolai , the Order of the Ship or the Order of the Crescent , was a Sicilian order of knights . The founder was King Charles III in 1382 . from Naples .

The purpose of the order was to preserve peace among rebellious nobles and to promote shipping and naval warfare. The coronation of the queen was also a special occasion.

The sign of the order was a golden ship depicted on stormy waves. The order's motto was: "Non cedo tempori". This insignia was attached to a chain worn around the neck and decorated with shells and crescent moons. A cloak worn by the knights was covered with embroidered lilies. The ship was also on the left. A black velvet headgear with a golden agraffe on the front completed the order's clothing . The agraffe also showed the ship fighting the waves.

With the donor's death (1386) the order expired.
