Order of the Burgundian Cross

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Order of the Burgundian Cross in Tunis was established on July 22, 1535 (1555) as an order of knights . The founder was Emperor Karl V.

The occasion of the foundation was the conquest of Tunis and the liberation from the Turks . The establishment of a Spanish protectorate was also a foundation event. The notorious pirate of the time Haireddin Barbarossa ( Khair ad-Din Barbarossa ) is said to have been expelled from Tunis, the capital of African barbarism, and the rightful King Mulei Hassan was reinstated.

The sign of the order, a " Burgundian cross ", was chosen by the emperor because such a coat adorned his tunic. A so-called lighter with the motto hung on the cross , spraying sparks. The order's motto was "Barbaria". The order only existed for a short time.
