The Order of St. George of the military bishop of the Austrian Army (full name) is a nine-step Austrian award that the particular since 1977 Military Bishop of the Armed Forces for extraordinary services to the pastoral and the lay apostolate will be awarded in the Austrian army.

Foundation, endowment

The military vicar of the Austrian Armed Forces, Franz Žak, founded the Order of St. George by decree of September 1, 1977 (Zl. 1070/1977) as an award for special services to the military pastoral care in eight stages. The first military bishop, Alfred Kostelecky, renewed and revised the award regulations by decree of August 1, 1989 (Zl. 938-2680 / 89) and increased the order levels to nine.

Award

In principle, the award can be given to all persons (residents and foreigners) who have made particular merits in pastoral care and the lay apostolate within the Austrian Armed Forces or who have performed extraordinary services in the sense of Christian soldiery. It is irrelevant whether or not the person worthy of order was a member of the Austrian Armed Forces at the time of the services or services rendered. In particular, soldiers from the presence , militia and reserve stocks are also included who have performed worthy of service outside of Austria in the context of peacekeeping operations by the United Nations . In special cases, the award can also be awarded posthumously and presented to close relatives as an honorable memory.

Order classes

Large gold cross of honor

Neck decoration on a 40 mm wide ribbon in the papal colors of yellow and white. The cross of the jewel with a diagonal diameter of 53 mm is gold-plated and inlaid in white, the relief is real silver-plated, patinated and has a diameter of 20 mm.

Golden and silver cross of honor

Chest decoration consisting of a - depending on the order level - gold-plated or silver-plated gem in the same design as the Great Golden Cross of Honor.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Cross of Merit

Chest decoration on a 40 mm wide triangular ribbon with a gold-plated, silver-plated or bronzed jewel in the same design as the Great Golden Cross of Honor, but with a 45 mm diagonal diameter and a relief of St. George with 18 mm diameter. All levels of the order are worn on the yellow and white ribbon, which has a 3 mm wide metal strip in the yellow part, in gold, silver or bronze depending on the level of the order.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal of Merit

Chest decoration on a 40 mm wide triangular ribbon with a gold-plated, silver-plated or bronzed medal embossed on one side with a diameter of 45 mm, depending on the level of the order, showing the four-legged cross and St. George in relief. The ribbon has a 3 mm wide woven metal strip in the white part, in gold, silver or bronze depending on the level of the order.
