Günter Schmahl (soccer player)

Günter Schmahl (born September 17, 1941 ) is a German football player who played in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , for SC Lokomotive Leipzig and ASK Vorwärts Berlin in the 1960s . He is a six-time GDR junior national player.

Athletic career

As a player in the company sports community (BSG) Motor Altenburg , Günter Schmahl was appointed to the squad of the GDR junior national team in 1959 . By 1960 he played six international matches with the junior team, in which he was used as a striker and scored one goal.

For the 1960 season (calendar year season) Schmahl moved from Motor Altenburg, where he had last played in the third-class II. GDR League , to the upper division SC Lok Leipzig. There he was mainly used in the reserve team. He played two games with the league team: on July 31st in the round of 16 cup match against BSG Chemie Zeitz (4-1) and on August 7th in the 14th league season game against SC Dynamo Berlin (0-4).

In the same season Schmahl committed himself to a four-year service in the National People's Army of the GDR . He was given the opportunity to continue playing football and was initially stationed at the Vorwärts Cottbus army sports community , which played in the second-rate first GDR league . In the 1960 season Schmahl was used there in a point game. Subsequently, the football game operation in the GDR was switched back to the summer-spring game rhythm. In addition, all game classes were played through from winter 1961 to spring 1962. Forward Cottbus had to complete 39 point games, of which Schmahl played 24 games. In the 1962/63 season, the leadership club of the Army Sports Association Vorwärts , the ASK Vorwärts Berlin, brought Günter Schmahl into its league team after the loss of some regular players. He was used from the 5th to the 11th matchday as a striker in various positions. Although he had a good debut with two goals in his first two missions, he was later no longer used in the league and played in the reserve team. There he also spent the entire 1963/64 season.

After his discharge from the army Schmahl joined the GDR league club Chemie Zeitz. While he played only 15 of the 30 point games in 1984/85, he was a regular for the Zeitzern in the seasons 1965/66 to 1968/69. Of the 120 GDR league games played in this period, he completed 113 games. In his time in the GDR league in Zeitzer, he scored eleven goals. After the 1968/69 season, chemistry had to relegate to the third-rate district league. Günter Schmahl no longer played roof in higher-class football.
