Order of Hops

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Order of the hops , as Hopfe north or Flanders Hopfe North called, was a (Dutch) military orders .

It was donated by Johannes , Duke of Burgundy , in 1411 (1400) shortly after taking over the county of Flanders as an inheritance. The occasion was the honor of hop growing, which was an important economic pillar. Citizens should also be given a reason to admire the duke. For the duke it was love for the country and for beer.

Despite all efforts, the order was never a real knightly order. Abroad, the order was smiled at as an order of beer. The duke was a pre-drinker and there was a ducal drinking company Gambrinus.

One of the traditional symbols of the order was the ducal coat of arms , on which there was a black Flemish lion in the middle shield and everything hung on hop branches on a golden chain. The order's motto was: "ego sileo", for example: "I am silent"
