Order of the Lion (France)

The Order of the Lion was a French knightly order . The founder was Enguerrand I. de Coucy in 1080 . The occasion is said to have been the killing of a lion. The medallion showed a lion under a floating crown.

This order and the Spanish order of St. Marie of the Lily from the foundation year 1048 are among the first secular knightly orders.

Knights wore the award as a neck medal .
