The Burg Waldau was a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Order in the then East Prussia City Waldau, today Nisowje .
history
Faithful to the Teutonic Order, two Samland knights built a castle in 1264, which since 1457 has served the grand masters temporarily as a summer residence .
Around 1860 the castle was rebuilt for the first agricultural college (1858) in East Prussia; but this was relocated to Königsberg in 1868 . From 1870, Waldau was a teachers' college that was connected to the Royal Orphanage. After the First World War it was closed and a local museum was housed. Here the founder of the youth hostel movement, Richard Schirrmann , received his training and Elisabet Boehm , the founder of the rural women movement, taught at the agricultural school. After 1945 an agricultural polytechnic was established.
Then they wanted to set up a museum, but the building was transferred for further use in 2012 to the Russian Orthodox Church , which wants to run a museum with a school.
The castle has been restored and inhabited by a family since March 2020 and is to become their property in the future. The family looks after guests in the house and conducts tours.
