Nisowje ( Russian Низовье, German Waldau ) is a settlement in the Russian Oblast of Kaliningrad . It is located in Guryevsk Rajon and belongs to the municipal self-government unit of the Guryevsk district .
Geographical location
Nisowje is located about 18 kilometers east of the city of Kaliningrad (Königsberg) on the Russian trunk road A 229 (former German Reichsstrasse 1 , today also European route 77 ). In the village, a side road branches off from the A 190 trunk road in a northerly direction via Orechowka (Poduhren) to Konstantinowka (Konradswalde) .
Until 1945 Waldau (Ostpr) was a train station on the route from Königsberg (Prussia) (Russian: Kaliningrad) via Prawten (Lomonossowo) to Possinder (Roschtschino) and Tapiau (Gwardeisk) of the Königsberger Kleinbahn .
Place name
The name of the village is likely to be derived from Prussian , where "waldonis" means something like "ruler".
history
Located to the east of Königsberg (Prussia) , Waldau was notarized in the parish of Arnau (today in Russian: Rodniki, before 2003: Marjino) since 1258. Loyal to the Teutonic Order , two Samland knights built the Waldau Ordensburg in 1264 , which since 1457 has temporarily served as a summer residence for the Grand Masters . Around 1860 the castle was rebuilt for the first agricultural college (1858) in East Prussia; however, it was moved to Königsberg in 1868. From 1870, Waldau was a teachers' college that was connected to the Royal Orphanage. Lothar Turowski's father was the last director of the seminar. The seminary was dissolved after the First World War .
On April 30, 1874, Waldau became the administrative seat and eponymous place for the newly established district of Waldau, which existed until 1945 and belonged to the Königsberg district (Prussia) (1939 to 1946 Samland district ) in the Königsberg district of the Prussian province of East Prussia . In 1910 the rural community of Waldau counted 156, the domain Waldau 368 inhabitants.
On September 30, 1928, parts of the domain Waldau and the estate districts Linken (now Russian: Koschewoje) and Adlig Wargienen (Aprelewla) from the district of Groß Legden (Dobroje) were incorporated into Waldau. On March 28, 1929, the Fuchshöfen manor district came from the district of the same name in Waldau. The population of Waldau was 713 in 1933 and rose to 789 by 1939.
As a result of the Second World War , Waldau came to the Soviet Union with northern East Prussia and in 1947 received the Russian name "Nisowje". At the same time the place became the seat of a village soviet in Gurjewsk Rajon . From 2008 to 2013 Nisowje was the seat of a rural municipality and since then belongs to the urban district of Guryevsk.
The former south wing of Waldau Castle still stands. After 1945 it was initially a polytechnic high school. The buildings are still used for seminars today.

Due to the restructuring, the district of Waldau consisted on January 1, 1945 only of the two communities Waldau and Wolfsdorf.
Nisowski selski Sowet / okrug 1947–2008
The village soviet Nisowski selski Sowet (ru.Nизовский сельский Совет) was established in June 1947. In 1954 (apparently) other places from the village soviets Saosjorski selski Sowet and Jaroslawski selski Sowet were included in this village soviet. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the administrative unit existed as the village district Nisowski selski okrug (ru. Низовский сельский округ). In 2008 the village district was converted into a rural community.

Nizovskoye selskoye posselenie 2008-2013
The rural community Nizovskoye selskoje posselenije (ru.Nизовское сельское поселение) was established in 2008. In an area of 136.1 km², 4,409 inhabitants (as of 2010) lived in 30 settlements that had previously belonged to the village district of Nisowski selski okrug. In 2013 the rural community was dissolved again and its places incorporated into the urban district of Guryevsk .

church
Before 1945, the population of Waldau was predominantly of the Protestant denomination. The village and the domain was in the parish Arnau (Russian today, Rodniki until 2003: Marjino) incorporated, that the church district Königsberg Country II in the ecclesiastical province of East Prussia the Prussian Union of churches belonged. The last German clergyman was Pastor Arthur Brodowski .
Today most of the inhabitants, as far as they are religiously bound, are Russian Orthodox . With regard to the Evangelical Lutheran church structures, Nisowje is in the catchment area of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Kaliningrad (Königsberg) , the main church of the Kaliningrad provost of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of European Russia (ELKER).
Attractions
Today's Waldau Castle emerged from a castle belonging to the Teutonic Order .
