The Society was incorporated on December 17, 1898 in Portland, in the Library Building there. The first president of the 370-member society was Harvey W. Scott (1838-1910). Within a few years she managed to found a museum in Portland City Hall and a regional research library. In 1900 the first edition of the Oregon Historical Quarterly appeared . In 1917 the company moved to the Public Auditorium , today's Keller Auditorium . It was not until 1966 that it moved to its current address on the corner of SW Jefferson and Park in downtown Portland.

Dr. George L. Vogt has been the eighth Executive Director since November 2006 . In July 2007, the Oregon Historical Society received a two-year grant from Million 2.8 dollars from the state, so that the company could cover around 30% of their costs.

The museum , archive and library hold around 3 km of film material, more than 2.5 million photos (one of the largest collections in the USA), 85,000 artifacts , 30,000 books, 25,000 maps, 16,000 rolls of microfilms with 2,100 interviews with a total duration of 8,400 hours. There are also around 4 shelf kilometers of historical sources.

The Oregon Historical Quarterly has been published since 1900. The Oregon Historical Society Press has published more than 150 monographs since 1929 , but was discontinued in 2009.

The educational program includes the website, programs on folklore and ethnology, art and traditions, and training and workshops for teachers.

In 2008, the OHS and Portland State University's history department announced that they would put an Oregon Encyclopedia online. Since 2009, the Historian magazine has only been published online. Online exhibitions are also offered, such as about the nine recognized Indian tribes in Oregon, the railways and parts of the photo collection.
