The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is a technology museum in Portland , Oregon . It is on the banks of the Willamette River .
history
The OMSI was founded in 1944. It started out at the Portland Hotel , but moved to a rented house in 1949. In 1950 the museum opened the first planetarium in the Pacific Northwest . In 1956, with the help of volunteers, the museum built its first building on Washington Park. By 1970, three million people had visited the museum.
In 1987 Portland General Electric donated the land on the Willamette River to the museum, and the museum moved there in 1992. For its 60th anniversary, the museum was remodeled and modernized for 4.2 million US dollars, and in 2005 the OMSI attracted its 10 millionth visitor.

The museum is recognized as a non-profit organization and does not receive any public grants. It is financed from entrance fees, donations and membership fees. From May 2006 to May 2007, the museum raised nearly $ 19 million and spent nearly $ 17.5 million.
Exhibitions
A special feature is a submarine that lies in front of the museum in the Willamette River and was taken over by the United States Navy in 1994 . It is the USS Blueback (SS-581) , a conventionally powered Barbel-class boat that is 66.9 meters long and can be viewed by museum visitors. The propeller of the boat is in front of the museum.
In addition, the museum has several science areas, including its own hall for temporary exhibitions, in which, for example, the body worlds were a guest in 2007 . There is also the Turbine Hall , in which a steam turbine is installed, and several laboratories for chemistry , physics , technology and lasers and holography .
In addition to the exhibits, the OMSI has a planetarium with a Digistar II projector and an Omnimax 3D cinema.
