The Oresten (also Asesten, Dansesten or Tybjergsten) is a boulder ( Danish Vandreblokk ) made of granite , which lies in the middle of the Tybjerg skov (forest), about three kilometers west of the Tybjerg Church, south of Ringsted on the Danish island of Zealand . The stone is about 4.75 m long, 3.75 m wide, and 2.75 m on one side and 1.75 m high on the other.

The term Orestes refers to an uncultivated area or a lane in the forest. The initials and dates on the face of the stone come in part from the owners of the nearby Tybjerggaard manor.

Legend

The tradition, known several times in a similar form, says that at the time when the white church of Tybjerg was built on the Tybjerg bakke, a sorceress lived on the island of Tåsinge and looked to Zealand. The more the tower rose above the horizon, the more evil it became. Finally she tied the huge stone around her sock holder and threw it from the tower of Bregninge Church to Tybjerg Church. The sock holder tore and instead the stone hit the forest west of the church.
