history

Tender

Organ console

After the construction of the new parish church of St. Martin, built in neo-Gothic style, the town of Dudelange and the parish decided to buy a new organ that was appropriate for the location. An organ commission for the “preliminary study of projected organ building” was set up in 1911 specifically for this purpose. After a heated argument between the city architect, members of the city council and the organ commission, the contract was finally put out to tender. It should be emphasized that the city of Dudelange acted as the sole client and financier. There were no limits to the organ builder's disposition of the organ, but there were strict guidelines regarding the materials to be used and the general aesthetics.

criteria

List of the criteria to be fulfilled: 1. Invitation to tender according to the international regulations for organ building. 2. Use of first class materials. 3. A high proportion of 16 'and 8' registers . Use of typical German-Romantic sound elements, e.g. B. roll sills, cone chests and pneumatics 4. Borrowings from English organ building: double principals, tuba mirabilis, oboe 8 ′ of English construction and water motors. 5. Explicitly required French characteristics in the main work: trumpet 8 ′ and clarinet 8 ′. 6. Equipping the organ with two swell boxes.

Selection and completion

Seven organ builders then submitted cost estimates to the community: Steinmeyer , Seifert , Schlag & Söhne , Walcker , Voit , Stahlhuth and Dalstein. Steinmeyer and Seifert dropped out due to the high price. At Voit, the quality of the work was questioned. Schlag und Sons ignored the conditions and was therefore not considered. At Walcker and Dalstein, some complaints were made with inferior materials, insufficient engine power and rejected warranty claims. Only Stahlhuth's cost estimate was seen as recommendable. Stahlhuth, an organ virtuoso who was equally well versed in German and French organ building and had a profound knowledge of English organ technology, was finally awarded the contract. On August 11, 1911, Stahlhut was officially commissioned by the city council. On July 28, 1912, the organ was inaugurated with a concert in the Dudelange church. The Stahlhuth company was supposed to take over the maintenance of the organ by contract, but after the First World War the business passed into foreign hands.

Extensions and restoration

In the summer of 1962, the organ was renovated and enlarged for the first time according to the neo-baroque sound aesthetic that was prevalent at the time. Among other things, an electric action was installed, the historical console replaced and massive changes to the pipe inventory were made. After the organ was barely playable in the mid-1990s, the organ was again extensively restored and expanded in 2002 by the Thomas Jann Orgelbau company . The changes made in 1962 were largely reversed; The instrument was expanded to 78 sounding registers with German-Romantic and French-symphonic timbres and instead of the neo-baroque positive that was added in 1962, a new bombing mechanism with 84 horizontal tongues was built.

Disposition

The organ currently has 5261 pipes in 82 registers , divided into four manuals and pedal . Of these, 6 registers are extensions and 4 registers are transmissions from the manual to the pedal.
