Orličan M-3 Bonzo was a four-seat Czechoslovak school and touring aircraft from the second half of the 1940s. Only one copy was built.

history

The design emerged directly from the forerunner models M-1 “Sokol” and M-2 “Skaut” projected from 1946 . It was developed by Zdeněk Rublič, who was employed as chief designer after the nationalization of the aircraft construction company Beneš-Mráz in Choceň and its subsequent renaming to Orličan. The conception of the aircraft was quite modern for the time. The model, made entirely of wood, had a sound and heat insulated, generously glazed cabin and a low- wing design. The nose wheel landing gear could be fully retracted.

The testing of the prototype with the registration number OK-CIZ by the pilot Alfons Kobližek began in April 1948 and was completed without major problems. In May of the following year, the M-3 was presented at the Paris Aérosalon . It did meet with some interest abroad; However, no orders were placed. It was therefore decided not to put the sample into series production. The OK-CIZ was handed over to the Cartographic Institute in Bratislava , where survey flights were carried out with it until 1952. The machine then passed into the possession of Svazarm , where it was used for pilot training. There some world records could be flown with it: on October 23, 1961 Bäuml reached a top speed of 271 km / h on a 300 km route and Černy 258 km / h on 15 and 25 kilometers respectively. In 1969 the aircraft was taken out of service.

The successor model was the L-40 "Meta Sokol" , which was built in series and also exported .
