The Orličan M-2 Skaut ( German Boy Scout ) was a Czechoslovak training aircraft .
development
The M-2 was created as the successor to the successful M-1 Sokol sports aircraft from 1946. Like this one, it was designed by the chief designer, engineer Zdeněk Rublič, at the former Beneš-Mráz plant in Choceň, which was renamed Orličan after the war, at the same time as the M-3 Bonzo . It also had a nose wheel landing gear and was made entirely of wood. As a prospective training aircraft, it was given two seats next to each other for better communication for flight instructors and students. The drive consisted of a prewar Praga D engine with 55 kW, which drove a rigid wooden propeller.
In 1948 the prototype was completed and carried out its first flight with the aircraft registration OK – CEB . Like its parallel design, the M-3, the M-2 was also unsuccessful and this one specimen remained. However, the development led to the series-built successor L-40 Meta Sokol from 1956.
construction
The M-2 was a cantilever low- wing aircraft made entirely of wood. The wing with two-part landing flaps consisted of the middle section and two outer wings with a relatively large positive V-position and slightly positive swept leading edges. The normal tail was also self-supporting. The nose wheel landing gear was rigid and simply had tires.
