With 41 points scored, he set a new record for Eckerds university team in the 1976/77 season in a duel with Elmhurst College .

In 1983 Dunbar became head coach at FC Bamberg , who had previously been relegated from the basketball league to the 2nd basketball league . He led the Upper Franconian team, which included Kennith Sweet , Mike Boyle and former national player Holger Geschwindner , to the championship title in the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga and thus to direct promotion to the top German division. In the DBB Cup, the Bamberg team also reached the semifinals under Dunbar's leadership. In the Bundesliga, he initially looked after the team in the 1984/85 season.
