Ornes (Norway)

Ornes (sometimes Urnes written) a small community in the municipality of Luster in the province Vestland in Norway . The place had 63 inhabitants in the 2001 census. It is located on a mountain slope by the Lusterfjord , the innermost branch of the Sognefjord that branches off to the north . Ornes is across from Solvorn . A car ferry runs between these two places. Ornes is known for the Urnes stave church , which lies at the top of the village and is considered the oldest stave church in the world. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
