Orontes II (Armenian: Երուանդ, Greek: Ὀρόντης; † after 317 BC) was a Persian provincial governor ( satrap ) of Armenia . He belonged to the Orontid dynasty and was probably a grandson of the deposed governor Orontes I.

After the Achaemenid Darius Kodomannos as Darius III. in 336 BC Was raised to the great king of the Persian empire, he appointed Orontes II as his successor as satrap of Armenia. At the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC. BC Orontes II led the Armenian contingent on the side of the great king in the fight against Alexander the great . His fate after the battle remains uncertain. The victorious Alexander first appointed the Persian Mithrenes to be his governor in Armenia, but it is unclear to what extent he was actually able to establish a rule there. The same is true of the imperial order of Babylon 323 BC. Chr. Appointed satrap Neoptolemus .

Only in the year 317 BC Another Orontes is mentioned as the satrap of Armenia. It is likely that this was identical to the one who fought at Gaugamela, because he is referred to as a "friend of Peukestas ". It is possible that Orontes II moved to Gaugamela in the allegiance of Alexander and was able to make friends with Peukestas, who had risen to the satrap of Persis , in the further course of his campaign . After Alexander's death in 323 BC he could Used the weak, if not entirely non-existent Macedonian rule in Armenia to regain possession of this land. It is also possible that he then at the conference of Triparadeisos 320 BC. Was confirmed in his rule.

To what extent he with Orontes III. could not have been identical. Maybe this was his son or grandson.
