Orosius (Ambrosiana)

The Historiae adversum Paganos (English Bobbio Orosius or Ambrosiana Orosius ) is an illuminated manuscript from the early 7th century. It is a copy of the work of the same name by the late antique theologian Paulus Orosius . The manuscript was in the Bobbio Abbey in Italy in 1461 and was handed over to the newly founded Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan in 1606 (signature: D 23 sup. ). The place of origin is unknown.

The manuscript consists of 48 parchment sheets in the format 21.0 cm × 15.0 cm. The cover sheet is an ornate, ornamental illustration and the oldest surviving evidence of insular book illumination . The text is written in uncial script, some initials are enlarged and illuminated.
