Orquesta Canela

Orquesta Canela is a Colombian women's salsa group that was founded on April 1st, 1992 in Cali , Colombia .

The 14-piece women's orchestra was founded in 1992 under the direction of Maria Fernanda Munera Ricci. In the same year it was celebrated as the best new salsa discovery at the Salsa Festival in Cali. After that, the group became an integral part of the Salsa Festival and the awards increased: including two first prizes in the “Best Songs” category, a 1st place in the female orchestra category and a 2nd place in 1995 (after Gloria Estefan ).

“Orquesta Canela” has also made a name for itself internationally. They are regular guests in the famous “Copacabana” in New York , in 1994 they took part in the salsa festival in “Madison Square Garden”, and in 2003 in “Calle 8” in Miami. Concerts in Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico and Puerto Rico are part of their annual program. In 1999 they also visited Germany as part of their European tour .

Music and style

"Embrujo de amor", "Hablale a la luna" and "Tu intrusa y amante" were among the greatest salsa successes of "Orchestra Canela". “Embrujo de Amor” alone was number one in the charts in Mexico for six consecutive months in 1994. "Amiga mia" celebrated great success in Peru. "Yo amo a Colombia" was the national song for the Colombian team at the 1994 World Cup .

In the music of “Orquesta Canela” there are often typical Colombian echoes (“Qué borrachera” or “Nochebuena”). In “Hablale a la luna” the rhythm even changes once in the middle of the piece to cumbia .
