Orta Oyunu

Orta Oyunu refers to old Turkish folk theater that is played between the audience instead of on a theater stage. The place where the theater play takes place is called palanka . The main characters are Kavuklu and Pişekâr. The main female character is Zenne and is traditionally played by a man. Orta-Oyunu is first mentioned in writing in 1833 and reached its peak towards the end of the 19th century. Orta Oyunu became known in Europe through the descriptions of the Hungarian author Ignácz Kúnos.

The Turkish term "Orta Oyunu" means "entertainment staged in the middle" and thus indicates the type of presentation in the midst of the audience, but also the folk-related subjects: Traditional Orta Oyunu themes were typical situations from people's lives and the imitation and caricature of certain types of people.

The representations were often characterized by witty puns and play on words , but also not infrequently by extremely coarse humor.

The pieces, which were often improvised over long distances, were initially passed on orally. Analogies to the pieces of the Karagöz theater can be found in later written versions .

46 theater plays can be verified in written sources, some of them have identical names with plays of the Karagöz shadow theater. About 25 performers of the Kavuklu can be proven in writing.

During the reform period in Turkey at the beginning of the 20th century and during the transition to the republic, Orta Oyunu faced serious competition from theater according to European tradition. When many modernists were in favor of banning Orta Oyunu completely, this tradition gradually disappeared.
