The Orton Reef is a reef less than 1 m deep in the archipelago of the Windmill Islands off the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It is located half a mile north of Molholm Island in the northern section of Newcomb Bay .
The hydrographer D'Arcy Thomas Gale (* 1911) discovered and mapped it in February 1957. The Australian polar explorer Phillip Law explored it in 1962 with the ship Thala Dan as part of a campaign of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions from 1961 to 1962 . It is named after Mervyn Noel Orton (1920–1983), a doctor on Wilkes Station , who was involved in the survey work in Newcomb Bay during this campaign.
