Sust in Horgen

The Sust local museum is the local history museum of the municipality of Horgen in the Swiss canton of Zurich . It is located in the Sust building at the former port.

History of the Sust

The Sust in Horgen is closely linked to the history of the mule track to Sihlbrugg and Zug , as well as the transalpine freight transport on the Gotthard , which is why the road connection via Horgen is already documented for the year 1385. In 1452 the city of Zurich issued the first sustordnung for the sust at the Horgner Hafen (formerly called Haab ). In 1527 a customs post was established. A supplementary building has been documented since 1525; it was expanded as early as 1557. The Sust achieved its current appearance through renovation in the 17th century and the construction of the hipped roof around 1780. With the construction of the Swiss railway network, the handling of goods on the lake lost its importance.

History of the museum

The first initiatives for a local museum can be found in 1882, when a museum was suggested with the creation of the local chronicle. Despite various attempts and collections of material and objects in the course of the first half of the 20th century, no suitable rooms could be found; one had to limit oneself to small exhibitions.

The enthusiasm fueled by Horgen's millennium celebrations in 1952 encouraged efforts to set up a permanent local museum. This was opened on November 9, 1957 with a small exhibition in three rooms.

Since the renovation between 1964 and 1967, most of the Sust house can be used for the museum.

collection

The local museum collects objects and documents of all kinds, provided there is a close connection to Horgen, Horgner personalities or the history of Horgen. To date, over 11,300 objects from the collection have been digitally recorded, and over 3,000 photographs and 3,100m of film have been digitized.
