Ortwin Wohlrab

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ortwin Wohlrab (born February 24, 1953 ) is a German mathematician and IT manager.

Wohlrab grew up in Bochum and studied physics and mathematics in Bonn (diploma in mathematics 1980). He received his doctorate in 1985 under Stefan Hildebrandt at the University of Bonn (on the numerical treatment of parametric minimal surfaces with semi-free edges). As a mathematician, he dealt with minimal surfaces and is co-author of a two-volume monograph on it with his teacher Hildebrandt, which is a standard work. He was particularly concerned with the numerical calculation and graphical representation of minimal areas (and associated non-linear partial differential equations ). From 1985 he was Associate Visiting Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz , with Anthony J. Tromba . Back in Bonn he built a graphics laboratory that was used in particular for the collaborative research center for non-linear PDE. In 1989 he switched to the IT industry, initially to an IT subsidiary of Rheinmetall and then to the software house PSI AG , where he moved entirely to Berlin in 1996. He is CEO and chairman of the board of directors at the Internet service provider Netfox AG in Kleinmachnow , which specializes in computer security. Since 2009 he has been a member of the management.

For many years (until 2011) he was chairman of the interest group for companies in the IT and Internet industry in Berlin and Brandenburg (SIBB) and received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 2013 .
