Stefan Hildebrandt
Stefan Oscar Walter Hildebrandt (born July 13, 1936 in Leipzig ; † October 16, 2015 ) was a German mathematician who mainly dealt with the calculus of variations , nonlinear partial differential equations and in particular with surfaces of prescribed mean curvature, minimal surfaces and harmonic mappings.
Life
Stefan Hildebrandt went to Leipzig to the Thomas School in Leipzig (Abitur 1954) and then studied mathematics and physics at the universities of Leipzig and Mainz . In 1960 he gained in Mainz the diploma in mathematics, a year later he was at Hoelder Ernst with the dissertation Functional analytic methods for the treatment of boundary and eigenvalue problems of strongly elliptic differential equations doctorate , and in 1965 he has Mainz habilitation . Between 1963 and 1965 he was at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University . In 1967 he became a full professor at the University of Mainz, and from 1970 until his retirement in 2001 he was a professor at the University of Bonn .
Hildebrandt was best known for his contributions to the theory of minimal surfaces and, in general, the geometric theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. He and others wrote a two-volume standard work on minimal areas in Springer's Yellow Series (1992), with a three-volume revised and expanded version (2010). He solved the regularity problem for minimal surfaces with a smooth edge curve.
Hildebrandt was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (since 1985) and the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts (since 1997). In 1994 he received the prestigious Karl Georg Christian von Staudt Prize . He was an honorary doctor of the Universities of Bochum (1995), Leipzig (2001) and Düsseldorf (2001). Since 2014 he has been a personal member of the Advisory Board of the Benedictus Gotthelf Teubner Leipzig / Dresden / Berlin / Stuttgart Foundation . In 2016 he received the Science Prize of the Teubner Foundation for the Promotion of Mathematical Sciences (posthumously)
His doctoral students included Klaus Steffen , Claus Gerhardt , Jürgen Jost , Ulrich Dierkes , Helmuth Kaul, Josef Bemelmans, Albrecht Küster, Heiko von der Mosel, Ernst Kuwert, Rugang Ye, Ruben Jakob, Karl-Heinz Goldhorn.
