Former synagogue in Drohobych

The Osei-Chesed Synagogue in Drohobych , a Ukrainian city in Lviv Oblast , was built in 1909. The derelict synagogue is a protected cultural monument .

history

The synagogue was built by the city's progressive Jewish community in Viennese Art Nouveau style. It is at the intersection of Masepa Street and Scholem Alejchem Street. After the war it was converted into a sports hall.

architecture

Due to the course of the street, the building is not rectangular, but has the shape of a parallelogram. However, this is hardly noticeable due to the construction of small corner towers. The exterior facades to the west (the smaller side) and to the south are richly decorated. The east facade is simpler; originally it had two doors for the men's and women's rooms. Today one of them, presumably the one for the men, is bricked up.

Since the interior of the synagogue was completely cleared out during or after the war and all religious features were destroyed, nothing of the Bima and Torah shrine has survived either. A small indentation in the south wall could have been the Toranic one. This is supported by the arrangement of blind windows on the east and west walls, with which special lighting effects were achieved.
