Choral Synagogue (Drohobytsch)
The Choral Synagogue in Drohobych , a Ukrainian city in Lviv Oblast , is the city's most impressive Jewish building.
history
The synagogue was built from 1842 to 1865. Until 1918 it was the central synagogue for the crown land of Galicia . After the Second World War , when Ukraine belonged to the Soviet Union , it was initially used as a storage building for furniture and was converted accordingly. Later it deteriorated more and more. In 1993 it was returned to the Jewish community and restored from 2014.
architecture
The front side with the entrance has a richly decorated gable with small turrets, which is closed off by the tablets of the law. To the right and left are two large rectangular towers that give the front a wider look. The direct entrance area also has two large rectangular pillars ( pilasters ) and is also closed with a slightly lower gable. Windows are installed on two floors above the entrance door; to the right and left of it there are 3 floors with two windows each. On the side walls there are three windows over the entire height of the building. At the back there are two high windows, the third in the middle is closed except for a round window at the same height as the round arches. This is where the Torah shrine was located inside .
In the two towers on the front are the stairs to two prayer rooms for the women that were above the entrance.
Inside there are four pillars between which the bimah stood and which support the ceiling. As a result, the structure inside is reminiscent of the architecture of the nine-field synagogues (or four-pillar synagogues ) built in the early 17th century, such as the Great Maharscha Synagogue in Ostroh and the Great Suburban Synagogue in Lemberg .
