Georg Guggenberger (2015)

Georg Guggenberger (* 1963 in Würzburg ) is a German geoecologist , professor of soil science with a focus on soil chemistry at the Leibniz University of Hanover , and head of the Institute for Soil Science.

He is also a former president of the German Soil Science Society (DBG).

Live and act

After high school and high school in Essen , Guggenberger studied at the University of Bayreuth and graduated as a geoecologist in 1987. Interrupted by civil service, he continued his studies as a doctoral student with Wolfgang Zech at the Department of Soil Science and Geography at the University of Bayreuth. With the dissertation "Properties of dissolved organic substances (DOM) on spruce sites exposed to different pollution levels" he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD. After a post-doc at the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University , Fort Collins, USA, he returned to Bayreuth. With the habilitation thesis "Transformation and Function of Organic Soil Substance" followed in 1998 the habilitation with Venia legendi for the subject soil science at the University of Bayreuth. In addition to his work in Bayreuth, Guggenberger temporarily took over the substitute professorship in “Soil Biology and Soil Ecology” at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (1999–2001). He followed the call as university professor for "Soil Biology and Soil Ecology" at this university in 2002. In 2008 Guggenberger accepted the call to the Chair of Soil Science at the Institute for Soil Science at Leibniz University in Hanover.

In 2016 and 2017, according to Highly Cited Researchers , Guggenberger was one of the world's most frequently cited scientists in the “Agricultural Sciences” category.
