Moni Grigoriou

Moni Osiou Grigoriou ( Greek Μονή Οσίου Γρηγορίου ) is an Orthodox monastery on the west coast of the Athos peninsula in Greece . It is located directly on the sea on a rocky cape in the immediate vicinity of the monasteries Simonos Petras and Dionysiou . It occupies the 17th place among the 20 of the Athos monasteries ranking one.

history

Although the monastery was built relatively late, the exact year of foundation and the foundation legend are unknown. The origins of the monastery probably go back to the monk Gregorius the Younger, a pupil of Gregorios Sinaites. The monastery was first mentioned in 1347. At the turn of the 15th century it took 22nd place of the then 25 Athos monasteries. Up until 1483, relatively little had been written about the monastery. Only then did the abbot sign a Slavic document that resulted in financial support from abroad, particularly from Romania. The major fire in 1761 made further support urgent. The monastery experienced its heyday in the 19th century when it was more than doubled.

In 1903, 105 monks were still active in the monastery, but by 1968 the number had fallen to 34. An upward trend around the turn of the millennium brought the monastery a total of 86 active monks. According to the 2011 census, 96 inhabitants were given.

The monastery is regularly approached directly by a ferry and supplied with goods. It has its own boathouse, a small library, and modest accommodation for pilgrims.
