The three-storey building complex was built in the years 1902 to 1903 and 1927 to 1928. In the years 1902 to 1908 the northern part was built on the three plots 8-10, for which the gabled houses that had been there until then were removed. The southern extension was built in 1927 and 1928 on lots 11 and 12, and the gabled houses were also removed here.

The facade is designed uniformly. It contains elements of historicism and art nouveau . The grid facade is structured vertically. On the ground floor, a shop window front only interrupted by pillars extends across the entire width. The skeleton structure, clad with sandstone , has pillars above the ground floor that span multiple floors and divide the street front into twelve sections, with each section having three window axes .

An atrium with figurines was added in the southern part.

The building was built by the Wertheim merchant family . After the so-called “ seizure of power ” by the National Socialists , the Wertheim company was expropriated in 1937 and the department store belonged to the “Allgemeine Warenhaus Gesellschaft AG”. After the end of the Second World War , the house was taken over by the Soviet occupying power and later, in the GDR, it was public property ; From 1949 the department store belonged to the trade association “Konsum” . Several shops have been located in the complex since 1990.

The house is located in the core area of the city area recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site of the “ historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar ”. It is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund with the number 622.
