The earthquake in Izmir in 1653 ( Turkish 1653 İzmir depremi ) was held on February 23 of the year 1653 in the Ottoman Empire instead.

It had an estimated magnitude of 7.5 and a perceived maximum intensity of X (intense) on the Mercalli intensity scale .

Laurent d'Arvieux, who witnessed the quake, said the tremors lasted 15 minutes and aftershocks lasted for a month.
