Ostrowski Square
The Ostrovsky Square ( Russian Площадь Островского / Ploshchad Ostrowskogo , scientific. Transliteration Ploščad 'Ostrovskogo ) is an architectural ensemble in the central district of Saint Petersburg in the historic center of the city. This is where Nevsky Prospect , Rossi Street , Malaya Sadovaya Street and Krylova Street meet .
The square, named after the poet Alexander Nikolajewitsch Ostrowski , was created in the 19th century on the initiative of the Italian architect Carlo Rossi (1775–1849). Historical and cultural monuments of federal importance are on the site: the Alexandrinsky Theater , the National Library (with Voltaire's private library ), Anichkov Palace , a monument to Catherine II , the building of the Ministry of Public Education and the Directorate of the Imperial Theater on Rossi Street, the building of the St. Petersburg City Loan Company.
Even if not all of Rossi's ideas were fully implemented, the Ostrowski Square ensemble is one of the most important achievements of Russian urban planning and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list “Historic Center of Saint Petersburg”.
